Scotland Suffers Heartbreaking Defeat to Hungary at Euro 2024

Scotland's Euro 2024 Hopes Dashed by Late Goal

Hungary's Kevin Csoboth Scores in Stoppage Time to Knock Out Scotland

Scotland's hopes of creating history at Euro 2024 were dashed in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday, June 23, 2024, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in their final group game. The match, played at the National Arena in Budapest, was a tense and evenly contested affair, but it was Hungary who ultimately emerged victorious thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Kevin Csoboth.

The game was a tale of two halves, with Scotland dominating the first half and Hungary coming more into the game after the break. Scotland had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes, with John McGinn and Lyndon Dykes both going close, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Hungary, meanwhile, grew in confidence as the game went on and began to create some good chances of their own, with Adam Szalai and Dominik Szoboszlai both testing Craig Gordon in the Scottish goal.

The game seemed destined for a draw until Csoboth's late strike. The Hungary forward latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired a low shot into the bottom corner, giving Gordon no chance. The goal sent the Hungarian fans into raptures and left the Scottish players heartbroken.

The defeat means that Scotland finish bottom of Group F with just one point from their three games. Hungary, meanwhile, finish second in the group behind Portugal and will now advance to the knockout stage.

It was a cruel end to Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign, but they can take solace in the fact that they gave a good account of themselves against some of the best teams in Europe. They will now look to build on this experience and qualify for the next major tournament.
