NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees have pulled the trigger on yet another bullpen swap, acquiring left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In exchange, the Dodgers will receive left-hander Matt Gage and two additional prospects.
Ferguson, 29, was a key member of the Dodgers' bullpen in 2023, posting a 3.04 ERA in 68 appearances. He has been a reliable left-handed option out of the pen for the Dodgers over the past few years, and his departure will leave a hole in the back end of their bullpen.
Gage, 26, is a former first-round selection of the Yankees who has yet to find his footing at the major league level. He made his MLB debut in 2022, but struggled to a 5.79 ERA in 20 appearances. Gage will likely compete for a spot in the Yankees' bullpen this spring.
The trade comes just a few weeks after the Yankees signed free agent reliever Tommy Kahnle, another left-handed option for manager Aaron Boone. It's clear that the Yankees are looking to bolster their bullpen depth ahead of the 2024 season, as they look to contend for a World Series championship.
